Résumé
This study examines the variety of French spoken in Ontario. For well over 200 years, Franco-Ontarians have assumed the role of a minority group. Numerous societal and historical factors have influenced the ways in which the French language has evolved in Ontario. The first part of this study is devoted to an analysis of what makes up the Franco-Ontarian identity. We will discuss such subjects as the multitude of terms that have been proposed in order to provide both a name and an identity to this minority group, bilingualism and the attitudes of the Franco-Ontarian youth. The bulk of this study is made up of a summary of prior discussions pertaining to the variation in Ontarian French. This section seeks primarily to determine which linguistic traits commonly associated with popular varieties of Canadian French are present in the speech of Franco-Ontarians. We will be able to understand to what extent social factors have influenced this variety of French. Finally, we will examine some plays by three major Franco-Ontarian playwrights and one Franco-Ontarian folk tale in order to determine the ways in which the authors have attempted to present in written form the variety of French spoken in Ontario.
