Abstract
Journalists, theatre directors and literary critics have all attested to the importance of language, realism and the representation of social life in the Franco-Manitoban theatre of the 1970s. Each in their own fashion, they have articulated perspectives on the narrative use of linguistic codes found in the Franco-Manitoban community. They have also identified the emergence of a common element independent of the stylistic effects occasioned by the use of a particular variety of Canadian French: franglais. Taking Roger Auger’s Suite manitobaine as a representative corpus, the present article examines various characteristic features of this sociolinguistic phenomenon: the adoption of an ideological position with regard to French and English, the relations between languages and dramatic expression and the emergence of an autonomous Franco-Manitoban dramaturgy. The article discusses these issues from the perspective of the complementary relations that are maintained by two types of semiotic mediations (linguistic and institutional) and of the French-language sociolect that they have fostered.
