Abstract
In Western Canada, where Francophones are bilingual out of necessity, a theatre has developed that explores the aesthetic possibilities of bilingualism. This bilingual repertoire, representative of a linguistic duality inherent in daily life, includes plays by Roger Auger, created in Saint-Boniface in 1975, 1976 and 1978, those of Marc Prescott produced since 1993 in Saint-Boniface and Edmonton, and the latest bilingual production of Cowboy poétré by Kenneth Brown, presented in Calgary in 2012. These productions reveal a complex activity of translation and language combination that shapes the entire process of creating theatre. In Prescott’s case, bilingualism is the very fabric of an approach to aesthetics that results in a genuine “bilingual poetics”. In addition, the use of English surtitles, which has become increasingly popular in Franco-Canadians theatre, allows the original work to reach a larger audience while retaining the specific orality and linguistic duality at the heart of the play. This practice is in itself a demonstration of multilingualism as it provides simultaneous access to many languages and offers the unilingual spectator a window on other cultures and theatricalities.
