Paul Zanazanian
Paul Zanazanian is Associate Professor in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education at McGill University. His research examines how historical consciousness functions in social actors' everyday means of knowing and acting when constructing social reality for the purposes of living. Theoretically and methodologically, he explores the role of historical consciousness in the development of individual and collective identities, and the resulting potential for action. He pays attention to these manifestations in formal and informal educational contexts. He is co-editor of Teachers and the Epistemology of History (2024), published by Palgrave Macmillan. His new book, Historical Consciousness and Practical Life: A Theory and Methodology (2025), in which he sets out his conception of historical consciousness, is published by University of Toronto Press. In this book, he examines community leaders in Quebec's English-speaking communities as a case study.
