Abstract
In addition to an analysis of a selected corpus of texts (1962-2019) derived from the Manitoban French-language weekly, La Liberté, the present study examines the linguistic ideologies underlying the discourses surrounding the notion of franglais. This corpus analysis is based on the following questions: are linguistic ideologies, in particular those associated with standard and authentic language use as exemplified in other parts of the Canadian Francophonie, also present in Manitoba and do they evoke the same forms of linguistic representation? If so, do they follow the same developmental chronology as found elsewhere since the beginning of the 1960s? This analysis reveals historically evolving changes in the perception of franglais that are similar to those observed elsewhere in the Canadian Francophonie. It also offers witness to the tensions between authenticity, which allows for this mixed vernacular, and the pressures of standard usage which are deeply anchored in the Francophone linguistic imaginary.
