Abstract
With the launch of Francophonies d’Amérique in 1991, its first editor, Jules Tessier, wanted to fulfill an urgent need: create a research platform that would reduce the isolation of francophone communities in North America and of those who study them. Beyond this initial aim, which has been largely met, this article shows how Francophonies d’Amérique has made important contributions to the legitimacy of the study of francophone communities in North America. This is explored through the notion of scientific fields and related works on the legitimacy of research. In concrete terms, the article relies on a qualitative analysis of the editorials contained in each issue as well as a quantitative analysis of the entire collection of articles published by the journal. The conclusion is both retrospective and prospective, looking at the challenges facing the journal and suggesting ways for it to maintain its relevance.
