Abstract
Cet article examine la reconfiguration des langues dans une entreprise canadienne active partout dans le monde dans la production et la distribution de produits pharmaceutiques, elle-même soumise aux transformations liées à la mondialisation et à la nouvelle économie. Il porte, d’une part, sur l’évolution historique de la dynamique des communications internes au sein du siège social et, d’autre part, sur les pratiques langagières qui ont eu lieu entre le siège social et une succursale en Europe à la suite de la privatisation et de l’internationalisation de l’entreprise. On observe que les transformations liées à la mondialisation contribuent peut-être au maintien et au renforcement de l’anglais, mais qu’en émerge aussi un besoin de bi et de plurilinguisme, d’où des stratégies de courtage, d’exportation, de délocalisation, de sous-traitance, ou encore d’improvisation du travail plurilingue.
This article examines how languages are being reconfigured within a Canadian pharmaceutical company that produces and distributes its products the world over, while being subjected to transformations linked to globalization and the new economy. The objective of this article is twofold. On the one hand it traces the historical evolution of the internal dynamics of communication at the head office. On the other hand, it explores linguistic practices that occured during interactions between the head office and a branch office situated in Europe, following the privatization and the internationalization of the company. It becomes obvious that the transformations linked to globalization somewhat contribute to maintaining and reinforcing the use of English. However, the need for bilingualism and plurilingualism emerges in parallel to this process, which explains the use of strategies such as brokering, export, outsourcing, sub-contracting, and improvisation of plurilingual practices.
