Abstract
This thesis examines the perceptions of Chiac. Chiac, the French dialect of Moncton, New Brunswick, is the most stigmatized of all Acadian dialects. This thesis details the elements that influence the attitudes toward Chiac. These elements are mainly to historical, political and demographic. We then analyze the perceptions of Chiac among young francophones of Moncton, as they emerge from a survey conducted in December 2001. We discover the degree to which Chiac is used, accepted, and the desired role of Chiac, according to the responses of young people who speak Chiac, and those who do not speak it.
