Abstract
Quantitatively examines Francophone immigration in Canada from 1991 to 2006, using data from Statistics Canada and Citizenship and Immigration Canada. Contrary to common belief, second- and third-generation Francophone groups in Canadian metropolitan areas outside Quebec, particularly Toronto and Ottawa, do not have higher linguistic retention rates than the descendents of Francophone immigrants. Therefore, the identification of host communities capable of supporting new immigrants should expand beyond the criteria of "rootedness" in order to better protect French minority groups.
