Abstract
The literature on obsolescent languages provides both helpful and discouraging perspectives. The authors place the circumstances surrounding and the condition of indigenous languages in Western Canada in relation to that found in other parts of the world. Based on sociolinguistic research in Saskatchewan, Canada, a reflection of the significance of language loss for indigenous communities is set forth.
