Abstract
Since 2000-2001, Québec municipalities have been experiencing an episode of highly contested territorial reorganizations in the form of municipal mergers: forced groupings of municipalities through a provincial legislative measure. On Montréal Island, protests led to the demerging of fifteen municipalities from the new city of Montréal. This paper, based on a Master’s thesis in sociology, proposes an analysis of the link between the language profiles of the citizens affected by the reform and the phenomena of acceptance or rejection of municipal mergers. To what extent can the municipal demergers on Montréal Island be considered as a cultural affirmation strategy?
