Abstract
Although the French-speaking population of Manitoba is very restricted in size, we find there a vibrant literary community able to function daily in French. We have selected a body of approximately three hundred poems which were written or published in Manitoba. Having studied these poems, we have picked out and examined recurring themes and specific aspects: History, Human Nature, Physical Nature, Identity, Creativity and Language. What joins all these general topics are the particular ways in which they pertain to this tiny group which forms the French-speaking culture of Manitoba. We notice that in spite of all the restrictions placed upon a small cultural and linguistic minority, the French-speaking Manitobans create poetry which is rich and interesting. At the beginning, French-language poetry in Manitoba was tied to politics. Not static, however, this poetry has evolved. Far from being simply decorative, it is interesting and demanding for the reader, full of images and of language which deal with all the topics affecting humankind.
