Abstract
Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario (TN-O), of Sudbury, Ontario, is an avant-garde theater formed in the early 1970's by young francophone intellectuals that represents the search for a new cultural identity among Francophones in Canada. In particular, its bilingual version of William Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet' (with Juliet speaking French and Romeo speaking English) poetically reflects the political issue of the status of French language and culture in Canada, a problem that has vexed Canadians since the British defeated the French in Montreal in 1760.
