Abstract
Franco-Albertans have had access to French language schools since 1984, and obtained their first French school board in 1994. What is the state of the ethnolinguistic vitality of Franco-Albertan secondary students 10 years after Landry and Allard's study (1988) indicated a subtractive bilingualism for most of the students? The subjects for this study were students in grades 11 and 12 enrolled in francophone schools in Alberta in 1998. Using the questionnaires and tests designed by Landry and Allard, this study attempts to demonstrate the relative improvements in the areas of students' ethnolinguistic identity, use of French, and beliefs in the ethnolinguistic vitality of the French community. An important finding is the distinction between the improvements of the scores of students in the rural milieu and the more modest improvements of the urban milieu. The need for a concerted effort between the school and the entire school community to work towards the creation of a more authentic learning milieu is discussed.
