Abstract
In this article, we describe the cross-linguistic awareness of possessive determiners in English and French among nine future French teachers in Saskatchewan. Using data from an open-ended questionnaire and a justified translation task, we report on their ability to use these determiners orally and we focus on how they explain their underlying linguistic characteristics in both languages. We also zero in on the similarities and differences that these participants perceive in regard to possessive determiners in English and French. Results show that participants know how to use these determiners in both languages; they also understand the linguistic features related to their use in French. In English, their explanations of the linguistic features of possessive determiners are generally relevant, but not as relevant as those given for French determiners.
