Abstract

Summary This article presents the results of a study of 550 students “having rights” in the Acadian regions of Nova Scotia regarding the question of status of students’ language of schooling. The results show that, within this minority language context, support for schooling in French language schools is positively associated with the development of additive type bilingualism. More specifically, this is associated with a desire to integrate into the francophone community and its ethnolinguistic identity. The authors note that the desire to integrate and the francophone identification are related to the strength of the ethnolinguistic francophone experience. A preference for schooling in French is positively associated with the level of schooling of those students “having rights”.
